CALL FOR PAPERS
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the University of Algarve (Portugal) are pleased to invite you to participate and to submit papers to the Forum “Tourism and Science: Bridging Theory and Practice” to be held at the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal, from 1-3 June 2011.
Academic and professional papers are welcome, and will be contributing to the UNWTO.Know Forum and the resulting UNWTO Algarve Consensus. Papers should comply with the methodological guidelines set for the Forum, encompassing such topics as:
• Development (incl. marketing positioning and competitiveness)
o Identifying and fostering actors: private and public
o Developing actors’ capabilities
o Establishing empowering frameworks – science, technology, procedures and capital (human, social, physical and financial)
• Climate change (incl. sustainability issues)
o Analysis and research tools
o Policy: research, voluntary standards, codes, norms and laws
o Science, technology and procedures.
• Governance
o Human capital: education and training
o Institutional capital: institutions’ development and policies
o Conventional capital: facilitating investments and productivity.

SCOPE
The last decades, the tourism industry is characterised by a rapid development, the use of mass elements, and the visual consumption. The domination of the mass model of tourism development has led to the deterioration of the resources of many places, and eventually to the decrease of their quality, resulting in a series of negative impacts to the host destinations. In an era where the economic crisis and its associated problems are evident in many countries, the need to turn towards more adequate forms of tourism development and the discovery of new emerging markets are of critical importance. The special session Niche Tourism and New Emerging Markets to be held as part of the International Conference on Tourism (ICOT 2011) “Tourism in an Era of Uncertainty”, aims to examine the significance of niche tourism and new emerging markets for the long term development and economic growth of destinations, but also for the enrichment and construction of more meaningful experiences for visitors themselves. The session will give the opportunity to academics, practitioners, policy makers, consultants, and researchers to discuss and exchange ideas and methodologies regarding the various types of niche tourism and new emerging markets and their contribution to the maximization of the potential of a destination and to the formation of more holistic experiences for visitors and tourists.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers that focus (but not limited) on the following themes:
• Trends and future of niche tourism (cultural, religious, tribal, heritage, coastal, educational, adventurous, rural, festivals/events, sport, dark, youth, elderly, photographic, conference, special interest, ecotourism etc.)
• New emerging markets: the catalyst for developing competitive products
• Niche tourists’ perceptions, motivation, and experience
• Niche tourism, product diversification, and image projection: policy issues
• Social, economic, and environmental impacts of niche tourism
• Managing niche destinations: creating, planning, and developing niche activities
• Marketing niche tourism
• Niche tourism: sustainable tourist development and transformation of destinations
• Niche markets and host communities’ relationships
• Niche tourism and identity formation

SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION OF PAPERS
Abstracts of no more than 350 words should be submitted electronically by February 28th, 2011 to Dr. Nikolaos Boukas at the following email address: N.Boukas@euc.ac.cy
Papers presented at the session conference will be considered for publication in special issues/volumes or sections of the International Journal of Tourism Policy.

The design and operations of conference and exhibition venues.
Business tourism trends.
Co-operation between companies operating in the meetings and business events industry and educational institutions.
The role of business events in the marketing mix.
Service quality in the meetings and business events industry.
Examples of original initiatives in the field of teaching or researching meetings and business events or examples of co-operation between employers and educational institutions.

Alqueva: que princípios para a constituição de um destino turístico?

O turismo assume um papel cada vez mais relevante nos domínios económico-social, o qual é reconhecido através da sua integração nas prioridades das políticas de desenvolvimento nacionais, regionais e locais. Sublinhe-se o facto, deste sector contribuir aproximadamente para a criação de 219 milhões de empregos directos e indirectos, correspondendo a cerca de 7,6% do total mundial, bem como por 9,4% do PIB mundial. Apesar da quebra de optimismo provocada pela actual crise económico-financeira, as projecções e tendências para a actividade turística são de menor pessimismo, na medida em que segundo a Organização Mundial de Turismo, em 2009 o sector do turismo sofrerá uma ligeira quebra, entre 1% a 2%, no indicador das chegadas turísticas internacionais aos aeroportos. Portugal surge em 19.º lugar no ranking mundial dos destinos turísticos, registando em 2007, cerca de 12,3 milhões de chegadas turísticas internacionais aos aeroportos, reflectindo-se em 7.652 milhões de euros de receitas turísticas. No caso da região Alentejo, desde a década de 90 do século passado, regista-se uma assinalável ascensão na sua representatividade e competitividade turísticas, traduzindo em 2008, segundo dados publicados pelo INE, pouco mais de 1 milhão de dormidas nos estabelecimentos hoteleiros e cerca de 200 mil dormidas em estabelecimentos de Turismo no Espaço Rural.
O Alentejo, dadas as peculiares características territoriais e culturais, deverá gizar a sua afirmação turística planeando e construindo um destino integrado na óptica da sustentabilidade dos seus recursos e na capacidade de identificar e projectar os seus reais elementos diferenciadores. Neste sentido, a singularidade provocada pelo surgimento do maior lago artificial da Europa propiciou um desafio para os diversos stakeholders da actividade turística regional, provocando a legítima expectativa de potenciar a criação de um destino turístico no Alqueva. No entanto, será premente acautelar que para a conceptualização de um destino dever-se-á identificar e caracterizar o espaço territorial mediante a análise da sua homogeneidade em termos geográficos (na qual se incluem as acessibilidades e sinalética); constituir uma oferta turística estruturada (na perspectiva do visitante será importante ter em conta que, o produto global que se proporciona incorpora uma experiência complexa que se baseia nos recursos oferecidos pelos agentes turísticos locais e outros serviços e produtos locais) e não menos importante promover uma comercialização conjunta e agregada de todas as componentes da oferta turística local.
Tais premissas de análise deverão, no caso da área territorial do Alqueva merecer o devido diagnóstico e empenhamento, pelo que, será necessário garantir que a sua sustentabilidade enquanto destino turístico se pautará pela promoção da qualidade de vida das comunidades residentes nas vertentes económica, social e ambiental, bem como, na garantia da constituição de um destino competitivo no contexto nacional e internacional que resulte na satisfação de todos os actores desse destino, a saber: - visitantes, residentes, empresários turísticos, órgãos governamentais e não governamentais. Particularizando a análise na estruturação de um futuro destino turístico do Alqueva, julga-se que um dos elementos catalisadores para a sua diferenciação será a garantia de qualidade ambiental. Não obstante, alguns especialistas e investigadores sublinham que a qualidade ambiental tende a diminuir à medida que o destino turístico avança nas fases do seu ciclo de vida (Exploração, Desenvolvimento, Consolidação e Estagnação). Este padrão de evolução cria uma situação insustentável caracterizada por problemas ambientais, sociais e económicos. Tendo em consideração todos estes e outros aspectos de análise para a constituição de um destino turístico em Alqueva, dever-se-á indubitavelmente garantir a adopção dos princípios consignados pela Carta Europeia de Turismo Sustentável.

CALL FOR ABSTRACT / PAPER SUBMISSIONS

The 5th World Conference for Graduate Research in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure, Cappadocia, Turkey, 25-30 May 2010.

Following the success of the first four series, the fifth conference will be held in Cappadocia, the beautiful and historic region of Turkey, once again hosted by the journal Anatolia. The conference aims to provide a forum for research collaboration and mentoring of emerging tourism researchers in order to share their research experience. This is an international organization; therefore, submissions from international scholars are highly encouraged.

The Graduate Research Conference provides researchers and/or graduate students with a choice of two types of paper submissions:

● Refereed full papers

● Extended abstracts of theses/dissertations

For the selection process, each type of submission has specific instructions, which must be followed as below:

Thesis/dissertations (max. 2,000 words): Open only for graduate students to reflect the summary of their thesis or dissertations in terms of the development of hypotheses and methodology and showing the way how it may contribute to the literature. In addition to graduates currently enrolled, those who completed their degrees later than 01st January 2008 are also encouraged to submit an abstract.

Research papers (max. 5,000 words): Open both for graduate students and faculty who are encouraged to submit their regular conceptual or empirical papers. At least one author should be present at the conference to present. The authors are free to investigate any subject field they have enough knowledge, experience or research interests.

SPECIAL AWARDS

This year’s special awards will be given in four different categories (http://www.anatoliajournal.com/conference/awards.htm). Using the initial reviewers' evaluations to shortlist potential awardees, the final award recipients will be selected based on their presentations at the conference.

«Turismo: Para onde vais?» tema de conferências na ESHTE
A Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril realiza, no próximo dia 16, um ciclo de conferências subordinado ao tema «Turismo para onde vais?» que vai focar as diferentes vertentes da oferta e da procura turística.
As conferências, com oradores conceituados nas várias matérias, serão divididas em três partes. Na primeira parte será abordado o turismo em termos culturais, económicos e sustentáveis. A segunda, fará a «ponte» entre o mundo académico e a realidade profissional, e na terceira parte serão expostas soluções para a formação e qualificação das novas gerações. Também neste âmbito será apresentado o caso do turismo em Sintra e serão incentivadas as capacidades empreendedoras do público.
A entrada no ciclo de conferências será realizada mediante a entrega de um livro ou o pagamento simbólico de 4 euros que reverterão para a Cooperativa Cultural CrewHassan.
